Birmingham head coach Chris Davies fears Lee Buchanan will have a long lay-off after a horror injury in the 0-0 draw against Blackpool at St Andrew’s.

Left-back Buchanan, 23, was taken off on a stretcher and then went to hospital after landing awkwardly on his left knee after three minutes as he tried to stop Kyle Joseph getting a shot on goal.

“There’s no definitive news but I’ve seen the picture and it doesn’t look good,” said Davies.

“He looked to be in a lot of pain and it’s a real shame for someone who has worked so hard to get back to fitness. To have another big setback like that is really disappointing.

“We will have to see how he goes but he will have a scan in the next few days.”

Davies admitted the League One leaders were below par.

“We were not at our best. We have played worse than that but we have also played better,” he added.

“It was a tight game and both teams had chances, with ours coming towards the end.

“We lacked a bit of our normal sharpness in the final third. I thought we had good periods of play and more control when Marc Leonard came on.”

Blackpool created the best chances.

Joseph’s clean-through shot was blocked by goalkeeper Ryan Allsop.

Ashley Fletcher’s lob was deflected over, then Joseph fired against the inside of a post from a tight angle.

Birmingham’s only threats were Emil Hansson’s drive that Harry Tyrer palmed away, and substitute Jay Stansfield’s deflected shot which was hacked off the line by Odeluga Offiah.

Blackpool’s former Birmingham manager Steve Bruce was delighted with his team’s performance – but is convinced his old club are heading for a landslide title win.

“I said at the start of the season that I wouldn’t be surprised if they win it by 15-20 points and I’ll stay with that,” he said.

“It was a thoroughly deserved point. We were the better team and created the better chances.

“We came to attack them and we were terrific. That’s back-to-back away games with Wrexham where I’ve been delighted with the performances.

“We should perhaps have had more out of the game.

“I read Birmingham had almost 800 passes against Burton and they want to keep hold of the ball but they came up against a good team.

“We decided to have a go at them because that’s what we want to try to achieve.”
