Chesterfield assistant manager Danny Webb admitted that words were exchanged between both sets of staff about the officiating after his side’s 3-0 win against Bromley.
Goals from Armando Dobra, Ryan Colclough and Paddy Madden gave Chesterfield all three points in a game which saw the visitors reduced to 10 men after Omar Sowunmi was sent off midway through the first half.
Bromley manager Andy Woodman was also shown a red card a minute later.
Webb said: “We’ve had a few discussions about certain things in the game. I think it is a red card. He (Woodman) doesn’t.
“I thought we were really, really good. Even with 10 men, because they apply such a low block and sit deep, it doesn’t really change much in terms of their game plan.
“The way they work so well as a team and maybe look to counter, we knew that it wasn’t game over.
“I think we were all a little bit edgy until we got that second goal.
“Ryan Colclough comes on and scored. It would have been so disheartening if we had conceded. The game is won and it was important we kept a clean sheet against a very tough team.
“They are a good team and with Cheek up front anything can happen. Luckily, we kept him quiet tonight.”
Bromley’s goalkeeping coach Brannon Daly faced the media in Woodman’s absence and admitted the sending-off was a turning point in the game, questioning whether referee Ollie Yates gave himself time to consider the incident carefully before showing a red card.
Daly said: “We came here with a game plan and it’s unravelled a little bit with the red card.
“We’ll have to watch it back. There referee probably didn’t give himself half a second to think. I think the red card was probably out as the challenge was made – maybe even before. Then I think one of their staff got a bit personal.
“It’s a tough place to come and there always seems to be fireworks in games between us two. It’s always going to be backs against the wall.
“I thought the boys put in an exceptional shift. To keep it 1-0 for as long as we did.
“We’re an out-of-possession team – a disciplined team. How many saves has Grant Smith had to make tonight?
“We’ll take the positives. For 75 minutes, we were down to 10 men. We’ve been down to 10 men plenty of times and we’ve nicked draws or wins. That’s no problem. We’ll dust ourselves down and get ready for Grimsby at home on Saturday.
“We’re going back to Hayes Lane and we need to start making that a fortress.”
