Dave Challinor delighted to see Stockport remain patient to beat Peterborough
Stockport boss Dave Challinor was pleased that his side stayed patient to eventually overcome a stubborn Peterborough side 2-1, to ensure their place in the Sky Bet League One play-off positions at Christmas.
Odin Bailey, who Challinor drafted in as his one change for the fixture, netted Stockport’s opener, with substitute Tanto Olaofe securing the narrow victory 15 minutes from time.
On his side’s goalscorers, Challinor said: “We chose Odin to play wide right because he’s able to get round the pitch and in possession is able to look after the ball for us and he obviously got his goal as a consequence.
“For Tanto Olaofe who got the winner, I say you have to continue to work hard and when your chances come around, try to take them, which he has done tonight.”
Challinor added: “We were very good in the first half and probably should have been in front at the break. In the second half we had to be patient but we got the goal and it’s a brilliant three points.
“They’re a team that in a strange way, suit us a bit because they do play through and allow you to press and I thought we pressed really well in the first part of the game.
“What we didn’t do is take enough advantage of that because we made poor decisions with passes to get the ball through to create goal attempts but they were always going to get a chance.”
Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was left frustrated after the defeat, feeling the match was there to be won after Joel Randall’s 34th-minute equaliser.
Ferguson highlighted a trend in recent results where he felt his side were too easy to beat as he looks to turn around their recent inconsistent form, going into the festive games.
Ferguson said: “It’s a bad habit we’ve got into now, losing too many games and it’s a mentality that we have to change quickly.
“I thought the game was there for the taking as I didn’t think they threatened us as much in the second half but we’ve found a way of losing the game and it’s become too much of a habit.
“For their second goal, we haven’t stopped the ball going in the box and sometimes it’s about pure desire stopping the ball going in the net and too many games like that we’ve lost.
“A lot of the goals we’re losing from wide areas, we’ve looked at it and have done some work on it, but it doesn’t seem to be sinking in.
“It’s 20 games we’re into the season now and there’s something fundamentally wrong, but it’s my responsibility as the manager to change the narrative of it and at the moment I’m not getting the best out of them.”
