David McGoldrick is not human for the age that he is – Stuart Maynard

Notts County head coach Stuart Maynard described David McGoldrick as “not human for the age he is” as the striker scored both goals in a 2-0 win against Swindon.

The Irishman headed in the opener after 17 minutes and doubled their advantage before the break when he slammed home a through ball from George Abbott.

McGoldrick has now scored four times against Swindon this season, and Maynard said: “I was really praying for Didzy (McGoldrick) at the end to get his hat-trick with the overhead-kick, but he had to come off in the end because he has given absolutely everything.

“It’s like he is not human for the age that he is and that is exactly why he has had the career he has had, he has been incredible.”

On the game, Maynard added: “It was definitely important to get the three points and what you have to understand is that today concluded a run of games where we played every two days and the lads were dead on their feet, but the courage and performance level that they put in today, I think it could have been five or six.

“We have played a lot of teams in and around us and it has been an incredible achievement to come away with the points return we have.”

As for Swindon, the defeat leaves them in 19th in Sky Bet League Two ahead of the 3pm kick-offs and brought an end to their unbeaten run of four games over the festive period.

Manager Ian Holloway was full of praise for their opponents after the game, saying: “I learnt today how good Notts County are.

“I learnt how practice makes perfect in their methods and what they do, and I learnt that we could stop them but up front we just didn’t have that edge – and that is very unlike my forwards.

“But that is what happens when you play a side that dominates and dominates the ball and when you don’t take your chances you get nothing from the game, and it could have been a lot worse.

“With a fella like McGoldrick on the pitch, who was completely outstanding I have to say, that is the best individual performance I think I have seen in a long, long time at any level, never mind this one.

“Harry (Smith) has broken his nose. He said he wanted to play but I didn’t want to risk him, but we missed him today, you can see just how important he is to us.”
