Veteran striker Jamille Matt scored as Walsall beat Cheltenham 2-1 at the Bescot Stadium to continue their strong start to the League Two campaign.
Teenage striker Nathan Lowe, on loan from Stoke, broke the deadlock after 48 minutes with his first league goal for the Saddlers when he nodded in Connor Barrett’s headed pass from close range.
Walsall captain Matt doubled the home side’s lead after 66 minutes when he cleverly flicked home Barrett’s low cross from the right at the near post.
However, Cheltenham set up a nervy finish when substitute George Miller smashed home from close range in the 85th minute after Liam Dulson bundled the ball across the face of goal.
That came after the Saddlers hit the woodwork twice in quick succession as Ryan Stirk’s superb half-volley crashed against the crossbar before Lowe hit the post minutes later.
Victory means Walsall have won three of their opening four league games to trail early leaders Gillingham by a point while Cheltenham slipped to a third straight league defeat.
