Kabongo Tshimanga’s extra-time goal gave Ian Holloway a comeback win in his first game in charge as Swindon shook off their cup hoodoo with a 2-1 win over Colchester.
From a flick-on the forward swiveled and drilled low from close range in the 106th minute to put Town into the FA Cup second round after only managing that feat three times in 12 years.
Colchester had edged a lively first half with few clear-cut chances.
After the break Arthur Read found Harry Anderson in space on the right and the forward burst through on goal and rifled into the far corner in the 64th minute.
Swindon substitute Joel McGregor equalised seconds after coming on as he drove low into the far corner after Matt Macey had parried Tshimanga’s fierce shot in the 83rd minute.
A superb point-blank save from Macey blocked Sean McGurk‘s effort when he looked certain to score seconds from the end of normal time after being slipped in by Joel Cotterill.
In the first period of extra time County Ground old boy Jack Payne rattled the home bar before Harry Smith had an angled shot kept out at the other end.
But Tshimanga could not be denied to aid Holloway’s promise to give his new side a cup run.
