Karl Robinson thrilled as Salford make the FA Cup third round

Karl Robinson hailed another achievement for his Salford side as they reached the FA Cup third round for the first time.

Two goals in three minutes secured a 2-0 home win over League Two rivals Cheltenham Town at Moor Lane, with Frankie Okoronkwo and Cole Stockton on target.

Marshall Heys became youngest player to play in the competition for a professional club when he came on as a substitute in the 90th minute of the Ammies’ first-round win over Shrewsbury.

And the club have now created most history by securing their place in Monday’s draw, with the Premier League and Championship clubs now entering.

“This competition has been unique and kind for us this year, if you look at how we’ve performed,” Robinson said.

“I wasn’t quiet over my love for this competition because as a kid I always loved it and I am fortunate to still be associated with it.

“To be in the third round and in the mix for the play-offs when almost a year ago we were fighting relegation and out of all the competitions is pleasing.

“Hopefully we get a nice draw and see what we have left in the coffers.”

Okoronkwo opened the scoring in the 20th minute before Stockton converted from the penalty spot two minutes later.

Cheltenham missed a penalty of their own as they failed to find a breakthrough despite heavy pressure in the second half.

Salford took the lead after cutting Cheltenham open and Kelly N’Mai’s effort was blocked, but Okoronkwo dispatched the rebound.

Tyrese Fornah was gifted a chance to make it 2-0 by Scot Bennett’s mistake, but Joe Day saved.

Day was beaten again however in the 22nd minute when Jordan Thomas tripped N’Mai in the box and Stockton made no mistake from the spot.

Cheltenham improved, but after Liam Dulson was fouled in the box, Matt Taylor’s penalty was parried to safety by Young in the 70th minute.

Cheltenham boss Michael Flynn admitted his team were disappointing.

“We were flat-footed and off the pace,” he said. “In the first half, they ran all over us and we got what we deserved because we were way below the standards that we’ve set and it’s a reality check for a few of them.”
