Louie Barrie and Kyle Wootton were on target as Stockport marked their return to League One with a 2-0 win over Cambridge at Edgeley Park.
And the Hatters made the perfect start to the game when the on-loan Barry opened the scoring with just five minutes on the clock.
The Aston Villa forward latched onto a long ball forward from goalkeeper Corey Addai and spotting Vicente Reyes off his line sent a half-volley over his head and into the Cambridge net.
County went close again the first half through Jack Diamond, while Wootton saw an effort come back off the post. Will Collar did have the ball in the net only to see the linesman’s flag go up for offside.
Shayne Lavery went closest for the visitors with two efforts from a corner that the Hatters cleared off the line.
The second half was a tamer affair with Retes making a smart save from a close-range Collar effort.
Stockport doubled their advantage when substitute Jayden Fevrier picked out Wootton with a right-wing cross that he headed home from six yards out after 76 minutes.
Addai got down well to parry away a Lavery strike from inside the area as Cambridge fought to get back into the game.
