Matt Bloomfield hails Wycombe character after late win at Burton
Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield was a relieved man after he saw his side twice relinquish the lead at strugglers Burton before grabbing a late winner through substitute Dan Udoh.
West Ham loanee Gideon Kodua and Luke Leahy put the Chairboys ahead on two occasions only for Danilo Orsi and Charlie Webster, with his first goal in English football, to haul Burton level.
But Wycombe went in front again after 81 minutes with what proved to be the deciding goal when Udoh tapped home from close range from fellow substitute Fred Onyedinma’s low cross.
Bloomfield said: “I’m just really pleased to have won the game. We knew we were in for a tough night and it was really was to and fro.
“To throw away positions from being in the lead twice was disappointing on our behalf but it’s just great to get the win because this is never an easy place to come to and we have not got a great record coming here in recent seasons.
“The boys are a pleasure to work with. They are pleased for each other and they celebrate each other’s successes.
“They work hard every day and we try and instil that in them and the drive to take two disappointments of throwing away the lead twice and going on to get a third, we must be really pleased with that response.
“We need to tighten up because we are conceding too many for my liking but at the same time we are entertaining to watch and scoring goals.”
Burton head coach Mark Robinson was again left to rue lapses of concentration from his defence as they still search for that elusive first league win of the season.
After a sixth league loss on the spin, he said: “It comes down to a lack of concentration, certainly the third goal. And it has really cost us.
“We were more direct and went away from the football we want to play and we have still conceded three goals.
“We had a meeting about the situation of concentration but we have switched off again and they have made us pay.
“We knew we needed to win second balls against a side like Wycombe and we didn’t do anywhere near enough of that in the first half and we seemed to take the option to go longer which wasn’t necessarily part of the plan.
“We all want it to work so badly but we have to keep working hard to find a way out of the situation we are in.”
