Interim boss Matt Lawlor was delighted to give incoming manager Pete Wild a platform to build on after Fleetwood’s 2-0 win over Chesterfield.
The Cod Army started life after Charlie Adam, who was sacked after a woeful run of just one win in 12 games, with a fine victory at Highbury — only their second home league win since the opening day.
Wild watched on from the stands as Matty Virtue and Kian Harratt grabbed the goals to give their home fans some belated Christmas cheer.
Lawlor said: “I took one last year, took one this year and loved every minute of it.
“It’s a better platform for the new manager to come in off the back of a win rather than the tough run we’ve been on.
“I’m really pleased for the group, for the new manager and myself Nathan Pond and Mark Yeates as well.
“I spent five minutes with Pete after the game. I said there are a huge amount of positives for him.
“Getting in peoples faces, being horrible to play against and making this place rocking and bouncing like it was today.
“I think we’ve got to use that. I don’t think we have used that over the years. That Fleetwood mentality of one way in one way out.
“People find it tough coming here and I want them to find it tough.
“That was a lot of our prep from the last two days about making it tough for Chesterfield, who are a good team, to come here.”
Chesterfield boss Paul Cook is desperate for some reinforcements during the January transfer window.
The injury-struck Spireites had 14 players out during this defeat.
Cook said: “Obviously our injuries are there for all to see.
“It’s not an excuse but the reality is when you are carrying the injury list we are, it’s a struggle.
“You are probably looking to make changes at the top end of the pitch but the substitutions just aren’t there at the minute.
“We are struggling for numbers but we have a big squad. This is where football clubs have got to be careful.
“It’s not just about adding player after player, we have got to be careful in terms of squad, length of contract and so on.
“But it’s obvious we’ve got to strengthen now. We have got to get to January 1st.
“I have challenged the players to pick some points up between now and then.
“It was a tough day all round but we will keep going.”
