Cheltenham boss Michael Flynn joked that he was relieved after seeing Arkell Jude-Boyd resist the temptation to display his trademark backflip goal celebration after opening the scoring in the 2-0 home win over Morecambe.
The St Lucia international right-back had demonstrated his athleticism with an acrobatic somersault after scoring in the 2-1 mid-week Vertu Trophy victory against Cambridge.
But he was warned by his manager that he would face a fine if he injured himself in the process of celebrating and, after netting his first home EFL goal, he heeded Flynn’s advice.
“It was an unbelievable goal from Arks,” Flynn said. “I didn’t see him do his flip, which probably shows how surprised he was that it went in.
“I am pleased for him because he’s a smashing kid, but I did tell him off after Tuesday and said if he gets injured, it’s a big fine, so maybe he has listened and taken on the advice.
“He is a really good lad and two goals in a week now is a good return for him.”
Jude-Boyd opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a fine piece of skill and an excellent finish.
George Miller added the second in the 74th minute, following up after his initial effort was parried by Harry Burgoyne.
Cheltenham created the better chances in the first half with Jordan Thomas clipping the top of the bar in the sixth minute with a shot from the edge of the box.
Jude-Boyd fired an effort into the side netting in the 21st minute after deftly bringing down a long ball from Ibrahim Bakare, flicking it over a defender and curling a shot inside the bottom left corner.
Hallam Hope shot wide from a good position in the 38th minute and he headed Morecambe’s best chance of the second half wide 20 minutes from the end.
Miller made sure of the points with his fifth goal of the season as Cheltenham won by a two-goal margin for the first time under Flynn in League Two, lifting them up to 13th.
Morecambe boss Derek Adams felt his team wasted an opportunity to take something from the game as they remain second-bottom of the table.
“I didn’t think there was much in the game,” Adams said. “We were in control of that first half and the story of our season is we give away a goal and that’s exactly what we did.
“It was against the run of play. In the second half, we gave away a horrendous second goal, but we had opportunities and missed an open goal.
“They have three attempts on target and we had zero so everyone can see where our problem lies.
“We are not hitting the target, we are lacking in quality and it’s not good enough. We were the better team for large spells of the match.”
