Substitute Michael Jacobs earned Chesterfield a first Sky Bet League Two victory at Holker Street for 60 years to end rejuvenated Barrow’s five-match unbeaten run.

Jacobs had been on the pitch for only eight minutes when his shot deflected off Ben Jackson for his first goal since February 2024.

Chesterfield’s 1-0 win was their fourth success in five games and keeps alive hopes of a late push for the play-offs.

Paul Cook’s side were second best in a first half which saw the Cumbrians squander the benefits of a strong wind and a series of well-placed set-pieces.

Barrow’s best chance of the game came after only five minutes but striker Aaron Pressley, due to a poor first touch, was denied by goalkeeper Ryan Boot.

Chesterfield improved in the second period, especially after a four-way substitution after 69 minutes, including the arrival of matchwinner Jacobs.

And he drove the away fans crackers with his valuable goal that earned the Spireites a seasonal league double over Andy Whing’s side.
