Newport captain Mickey Demetriou scores last-gasp winner at Barrow
Newport captain Mickey Demetriou scored a stoppage-winner as his side snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory over 10-man Barrow.
Demetriou’s match-winning header came five minutes into added time at the end of the game as Graham Coughlan’s visitors claimed back-to-back victories.
The Exiles were already in the ascendancy when Pete Wild’s Cumbrians saw home debutant Rory Feely sent off in the 81st minute.
The former Bohemians defender’s challenge on Adam Lewis was ruled to be worthy of a straight red card by referee Seb Stockbridge.
Barrow now have not scored at Holker Street this year and are without a win in front of their fans since November 19.
Record signing Ged Garner saw a first-half header saved by Newport goalkeeper Nick Townsend, who also denied Elliot Newby in the second.
But Paul Farman was the busier keeper, especially after the break when he kept out substitute Calum Kavanagh’s header and a curling effort from Omar Bogle.
Newport were heading for a fifth draw in seven games until captain Demetriou scored his first goal of the season.
