Reading have ‘decision to make’ after narrow win at Peterborough – Ruben Selles
Ruben Selles said Reading had a “decision to make” about their League One season after sinking Peterborough 2-1 in the rain.
Harvey Knibbs grabbed the goals within 14 first-half minutes to fire the Royals 2-0 up at London Road.
Emmanuel Fernandez grabbed a consolation in stoppage-time, but it was too little too late for Darren Ferguson’s side to force a point.
“The dressing room is really happy,” said the Reading boss. “We love the rain! But we’ve won some games in the sunshine as well.
“We need to make a decision about whether we go up the table and stay there or not. It’s not a decision you make by saying ‘we want to get up there’ it’s a decision you make with every action you take on and off the pitch – that is the challenge for us right now.
“We need to be able to close out the game a bit easier. It was a tough game coming here and we’re pleased with the three points.
“We have to enjoy winning the match here playing the way we want to play.
“We need to keep going again and again and again with the same spirit and the same football.
“We are happy. We will enjoy it this weekend.”
Posh suffered their first home league defeat since August and boss Darren Ferguson reflected: “It’s a very poor result. It’s one I’m not too sure how we’ve lost.
“The starting point would be the goals we’ve conceded. The first goal, we’ve shown them a clip of (Lewis) Wing doing that in a previous game with a quick free-kick. We’ve managed to let him do it. The second goal is poor basic defending.
“I thought it was a very good performance apart from those two goals. Obviously it’s the team who scores the most that wins.
“We cannot lose a game of football playing like that, you just cannot. We just needed that break or a bit of quality. I felt if we scored a couple of minutes earlier, we would have got something.
“I had as many attacking players on as I could at the end.
“I’m frustrated with the result, not the performance, but the result.”
Ricky-Jade Jones and Kwame Poku both squandered good chances when 2-0 down and Ferguson added: “They’re very good chances and you’ve got to take them.
“The big chances are Ricky’s and Kwame’s when he’s through. Kwame normally scores that with his eyes shut. It summed up our day. I think if we score one of those then we get something out of it.”
