Southend boosted their National League promotion hopes with a 2-1 win over play-off rivals Altrincham.

James Golding headed the home side in front after 14 minutes when he met James Morton’s corner.

Macauley Bonne doubled their advantage before half-time as he gathered Leon Chambers-Parillon’s pass and fired home.

Regan Linney and Alex Newby went close for the visitors after the break before the former scored a fine left-footed effort after 59 minutes but they were unable to force a leveller.

The result lifts the Shrimpers to 10th in the table on 52 points, three behind Altrincham, who occupy the final play-off place in seventh.
