‘Special’ goal cheers Chris Davies as Birmingham beat Imps to reach fourth round
Birmingham manager Chris Davies hailed the “great” and “special” goals after they made history in their 2-1 Emirates FA Cup third round win over League One rivals Lincoln at fogbound Knighthead Park @ St. Andrew’s.
Winger Ayumu Yokoyama scored the club’s quickest FA Cup goal, netting after just 35 seconds, before Lyndon Dykes clinched Blues’ fourth round place in the 79th minute.
The Scotland striker lobbed Lewis Montsma, chested the ball down then lobbed goalkeeper Zach Jeacock full on the volley from the edge of the box.
“The FA Cup is about history and to score the quickest goal for the club is pretty special when you consider the club’s history,” said Davies.
“The game won’t be remembered but that second goal will be remembered for a very long time and we haven’t had too many of those memorable ones this season. That would be up there for individual ability – it was just a great goal.
“I’m pleased for Lyndon because for goalscorers it’s all about goals and he got a really great one.
“Lyndon wants to play as much as he can and he’s played a really important role this season.”
Japanese winger Yokoyama neatly controlled Scott Wright’s cross, missed by Tendayi Darikwa, and poked through Jeacock’s legs.
“If you can make a mark or an impact then it will be remembered for a long time and that one will be remembered because straight into the game we scored,” added Davies.
“It not only gave us a great start but it made history along the way.”
Lincoln’s Jovon Makama pulled one back from the spot in added time after substitute Alfie Chang brought down Montsma.
Imps head coach Michael Skubala said: “I was really pleased with our second-half performance.
“We can’t allow ourselves to start the game so slowly because it becomes an uphill battle – we need to be more aggressive and on the front foot.
“But I was really pleased with the character of the lads to keep pushing.
“In the second 20 minutes of the first half we started to get more territory and more on top and we started to create some half chances, and in the second half, I thought it was all us.
“I was more how I want us to be and look. There were a couple of questionable decisions and we found ourselves 2-0 down.
“Then we got a penalty and created some other chances towards the end. I thought we were the better team in the second half.”
