Spot on – how Cole Palmer’s penalty record compares to Premier League rivals
Cole Palmer set a Premier League record on Sunday after scoring two penalties in Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Tottenham.
The England forward has now scored all 12 of his spot-kicks in the top flight and here, the PA news agency looks at his perfect record and how it compares to the Premier League’s best.
Spot on
– Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure held the previous record of 11 Premier League penalties without ever missing. He and Palmer are the only players with a perfect record stretching into double figures.
– Ivan Toney missed out on the record when, after scoring his first 10 for Brentford, his 11th was saved by Newcastle’s Nick Pope. Toney scored another penalty later in the game which would have been to break Toure’s record.
– Dimitar Berbatov scored all nine of his Premier League penalties while among current players, Fulham forward Raul Jimenez has eight from eight with Bryan Mbeumo, Toney’s successor at Brentford, and Nottingham Forest’s Chris Wood on seven from seven.
– Former Southampton star Matt Le Tissier scored 25 out of 26 Premier League penalties while Danny Murphy, Callum Wilson, James Beattie, Julian Dicks and Erling Haaland have all converted at least 15 while missing only once.
– Palmer’s is not the first penalty landmark this season. Bournemouth’s Justin Kluivert became the first player to score a hat-trick of spot-kicks in the competition in their recent 4-2 win over Wolves – the Dutchman has four from four since moving to England.
Shearer tops the chart – twice
– Alan Shearer’s 56 successful penalties remain a Premier League record, 13 clear of second-place Frank Lampard.
– Having taken 67, the ex-Newcastle and Blackburn striker also shares the record of 11 misses with fellow former England captain Wayne Rooney.
– Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has scored the most penalties of any current Premier League player with 29.
