Stephen Clemence wants Barrow to build on long-awaited win

Stephen Clemence hopes Barrow “can take a lot of confidence” after beating Fleetwood 2-0 to secure their first League Two victory in 10 games.

Emile Acquah and Theo Vassell netted in the opening 10 minutes in the first English Football League clash between the teams.

And while there was no third goal, Clemence was not in a mood to nit-pick.

“I am the boys’ biggest supporter and I know they can produce that,” he said.

“That’s the intensity you have got to play with around the box. I put it on the boys this week and I am going to keep hitting them with a gentle stick every day.

“I am going to keep on top of them and try to win the next game. I am not going to talk about going on a run; it’s about the next game.

“Full credit to the boys for keeping going. They have never chucked it and that’s why I am right behind them.

“They can take a lot of confidence from this. They know what suits them best.

“I picked a side that I thought would run through a brick wall for the club.

“I know I have a group of players who care. They want to do well for the club, they want to do well for their own careers and if they carry on playing like that there is no reason why we can’t have a successful second half of the season.”

Fleetwood’s latest defeat extended their winless run to six games in all competitions.

Manager Charlie Adam admitted: “I have found it hard to deal with but let’s hope we are heading in the right direction.

“We are going to have to battle through this tough period. Key injuries to key players over the whole season has got us to this point.

“But we can’t shrink, we can’t hide from it. It is important to show personality and get through this period.

“You have to be able to stand up when things are not going well. You want to see character.”

Adam took some stick from the Cod Army’s travelling fans.

“I feel for the supporters,” he said. “I know they are frustrated and hurt.

“I pick the players and we have to find the answers. If not it is going to be a longer season than it already is.”
