Tamworth beat Burton on penalties to reach FA Cup third round

National League Tamworth dumped League One strugglers Burton out of the FA Cup on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Pirelli Stadium.

Lambs keeper Jas Singh saved from Danilo Orsi and Ben Whitfield to put the Lambs in control of the shoot-out before Haydn Hollis fired home the winning spot-kick.

Mason Bennett and Ronan Maher traded goals early in extra time after a goalless 90 minutes in the second-round tie.

Bennett fired home with the aid of a couple of deflections for Albion before Maher pounced to equalise after Max Crocombe had saved Tom McGllinchey’s effort.

Singh twice denied Albion’s Billy Bodin either side of half-time in a game of few clear-cut chances with the hosts dominating but unable to find a way through the Lambs defence.

Whitfield was close to giving Burton the lead minutes after coming on, his audacious lobbed effort from the halfway line catching Singh off his line but dropping just over the bar.

Another Albion sub, Bennett, also went close with a shot on the turn that Singh needed two attempts to grab on his line.

Ben Milnes almost grabbed a late winner in normal time for the visitors, but Crocombe denied his low curling shot at the far post to send the game to an additional 30 minutes and spot-kicks.
