Wigan beat Cambridge after extra-time in FA Cup
Jonny Smith’s goal after 119 minutes saw Wigan through in the FA Cup with a 2-1 extra-time win at Cambridge.
The second-round clash seemed destined for penalties until Smith’s cross from the right evaded everybody and found its way into the far corner.
It was goalless until late in normal time, when Brandon Njoku put Cambridge ahead three minutes after coming on as a substitute.
The forward arrived on 74 minutes and ran onto Shayne Lavery’s pass before firing a low finish beyond Sam Tickle.
The U’s were ahead for only eight minutes, as Smith squared from the right and Thelo Aasgaard had time to turn and fire across Vicente Reyes into the far corner.
Either side of the hour Reyes had twice saved as Dale Taylor went through on goal, and Smith’s long-range effort flew just over the bar.
Danny Andrew’s cross was then met by Kell Watts, whose header was superbly tipped over by Tickle, prior to the two late goals.
Maleace Asamoah was denied by a smart low Reyes save three minutes into extra-time, before Lavery and Njoku both fired off target for Cambridge. Tickle made a flying save from Korey Smith before Smith won it.
